Beautiful Philanthropy
Personal care and hygiene products aren’t always accessible to those living in poverty, an inequity that several global charitable organizations are working to remedy. In the UK, Beauty Banks (beautybanks.org.uk) collects donations of self-care and hygiene products to distribute to those in need through food banks, domestic abuse charities and shelters. Soap for Hope Canada (soapforhopecanada.ca) helps marginalized groups obtain essential hygiene at more than 450 facilities in Alberta and BC while Toronto’s The Period Purse (theperiodpurse.com) is striving to achieve menstrual equity across Canada.

Taking scalp and hair care to the next level is the Manta Pulse, the latest launch from category innovator Tim Bennington. Following in the footsteps of the original Manta brush, Manta Pulse literally comes to life with vibration technology that takes a three-pronged approach to reducing hair breakage, scalp stimulation and exfoliation. With a USB-charged battery, it can be used on dry hair to stimulate blood circulation to the scalp in a salon-worthy massage, when shampooing to gently exfoliate and remove product build-up, to apply a conditioning mask treatment or as a detangling or styling tool. With 4,000 pulsations per minute, the benefits of the Manta Pulse go beyond haircare to offer a moment of complete relaxation.

Biologique Recherche Ambassade Rive Gauche
Nearly 30 years after opening its iconic Ambassade on the Champs-Elysées, Biologique Recherche has opened its second Ambassade in the City of Lights. Located at 19 Rue de Tournon in the storied Rive Gauche district, famous for its literary and artistic history, this new location offers an intimate retreat for customized face, body and scalp treatments. The interior was created by Joanne de Lépinay, who injected the quintessentially Parisian building with a distinctly 1970s feel—the decade when Biologique Recherche was founded—through the curved lines of the original furniture she designed exclusively for the space, the Pierre Paulin seating and the Jules Wabbes wall lamps. With five grand treatment rooms spread over two levels, the Ambassade’s architectural centrepiece is its staircase, which is elevated by the sculptural brass moons and hand-blown milk glass balls hanging above. .

Synthetic Biology
With natural resources becoming increasingly precious, scientists across all industries are exploring new ways to artificially recreate biological systems without harming the environment. In beauty, that means developing lab-grown, biomimetic ingredients to replace those originally sourced from living organisms, a global movement led by Biologique Recherche. Their innovations have already been used to update the formulas of some of their iconic products, like ISO-Placenta, without compromising on user experience and results.

Beauty Menu
We’ve recently developed an in-room experience created just for beauty-loving jetsetters. Similar to room service, but with an emphasis on beauty and wellness, it’s a unique partnership between Living Beauty Inc., Biologique Recherche and the Fairmont Pacific Rim that will be debuting in Vancouver this spring with the Glow-Up Kit. A set of Biologique Recherche’s most iconic products that have been hand selected with the needs of travellers in mind, this complete in-room ritual was designed to care for skin while providing a relaxing and grounding moment for guests on the go. For added customization, the experience can be upgraded to include a one-on-one skincare consultation with a Biologique Recherche professional at the hotel’s Willow Stream Spa.

How Hair Can Help
There are more than 2,500 oil spills on average each year, an environmental disaster that hair can play a major role in helping to clean up. Since 1999, renewable resources not-for-profit organization Matter of Trust has run its Clean Wave program, taking clippings from hair salons, fur from pet groomers and fleece from farmers to produce recycled fiber mats. These natural, sorbent mats are then used to clean up major oil spills and are actually more effective than conventional petroleum-based polypropylene products. To learn more about how you can contribute to these clean-up efforts, visit matteroftrust.org.
